OSES2024
NEW BEDFORD, MA

JULY 10-12

Join Us in Historic New Bedford for the 8th Offshore Energy and Storage Symposium.

NOW ACCEPTING EXCEPTIONAL ABSTRACTS.

The Growing OSES Family Gathers Again.

The 8th Offshore Energy & Storage Symposium will take place from July 10 - July 12, Summer 2024 in New Bedford, Massachusetts on America's East Coast. This event brings together researchers, industry players and policy makers dedicated to driving the development and growth of offshore renewables and energy storage. This event follows a number of successful events held in Windsor, Canada; Edinburgh, Scotland; Valetta, Malta; Cape Cod, USA; Ningbo, China; Brest, France, and St. Julian's, Malta.

Bold Minds. Brave Hearts.

Our 2024 World demands courage. The time for indecision and uninformed banter has run out. The connections between people, energy, and our environment has never been more clear. Global conflicts and socioeconomic divides have further compounded the strain on our critical environmental priorities. Clean energy systems have the power to level the playing field, and remain one of our most potent tools to improve our Climate Impact. However, for these systems to become solutions they must be financially viable. Bold minds must emerge to drive ideas to disrupt the status quo. Equally important, the scientific community must have the heart to bravely sell these solutions past ignorant skepticism and across political lines.

Join us in Beautiful, Historic, New Bedford Massachusetts this Summer, at America's biggest commercial fishing port. Come seek the wisdom of the whales who own the oceans and two-thirds of our planet. The answers to many of our challenges are out there - we must be bold enough to listen, and brave enough to act.

Do You Know New Bedford?

Carol Anne Clayson
carolann-clayson WHOI.jpeg

Dr Carol Anne Clayson is the Director for Research Strategy and Innovation and a Senior Scientist in the Department of Physical Oceanography at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).  Her current areas of research include understanding the air-sea boundary layers and impacts on weather, climate, and energy sectors and the development of satellite and in situ sensors to observe these processes.  She has served on numerous national and international science panels, including service as the co-chair of the Climate Panel for the recent NASA Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space. She has served on the Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate and has been a lead reviewer of the US Climate Change Science Programme products. Dr. Clayson is the recipient of many awards including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President W. Clinton. She has also authored or co-authored over 65 journal articles and two books on air-sea boundary layers and numerical ocean modeling. Dr. Clayson  consults for corporate executive boards on ESG issues. She holds a BS in physics from Brigham Young University, and MS and PhD degrees in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado.

Bill Hurley
glosten_billhurley_112.jpg

William Hurley is a registered Professional Engineer in Naval Architecture, has co-authored numerous technical papers, helps lead the Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers (SNAME), formally in Planning and Finance, and now in Education, and he was recently appointed to the Board of Western Washington University’s Institute for Energy Studies. Bill has participated in all aspects of naval architecture work, serving on numerous new ship design programs and major vessel conversions, including ferries, research vessels, workboats, barges, dredges and offshore marine construction equipment.  While leading Glosten, Bill has been driver of outright marine innovation:   1) Design of North America’s first fleet of Voith Schneider Propelled (VSP) harbor tugs, 2) Design of the world’s first tanker escort vessels, the Lindsey and Garth Foss, 3) The Melville/Knorr conversion, which introduced azimuth thrusters to research vessels, and 4) Many Boeing projects including the development of the Sea-Launch program, the rocket transport ship Delta Mariner, and the Sea-based X-band Radar platform SBX-1. In 2006, Bill Hurley led Glosten’s entry into the marine renewable energy business sector.  Glosten now applies its engineering and analysis capabilities to the challenges of offshore wind energy, floating turbine foundations, installation vessels, and marine logistics supporting the marine renewable energy industry in the US and Europe.  Additionally, Bill is President of PelaStar LLC, a Glosten new-venture company formed to commercialize the PelaStar floating turbine foundation, developed by Glosten.

Kevin Stokesbury is the Dean of the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST), and a Commonwealth Professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. For the past 20 years his work has focused on the sea scallop and groundfish resources, including stock assessment, rotational fishery management strategies, growth and mortality estimates, gear development and recently environmental assessment of windfarm development. Most of his research is collaborative with the fishing industries of Canada and the United States and he was awarded the David H. Wallace Award from the National Shellfish Association (2013) and the Standard-Times Southcoast Man of the Year (2018) for his two decades of science in the public interest, and the connections he has made between fishermen and science. His research has been published in 75 scientific papers and 5 book chapters and funded by over 100 competitively grants (totaling >$ 40 million). He was the founding chair of the Department of Fisheries Oceanography at SMAST from 2005 to 2016. He serves on several ICES committees including Chair of the Scallop Assessment Working Group from 2013 to 2018, and Chair of the Nephrops Benchmark Workshop in 2009. He was recently appointed to the NAS’s Committee on Offshore Science and Assessment, (COSA) and is now the upcoming Chair. He has also been elected as the next President of the National Shellfisheries Association.
